Note on Husband: John WEISEL

John Weisel was baptised John Weisel, and his will is signed Johannes Weisel. Legally, for most court and census records, he is called John Weisel.

But family refers to him as George.

1) Orphan court records for Sarah Weisel in 1829 list her surviving siblings in birth order. They are Jacob, George, Peter, John, Mary, Elizabeth, and Joseph.

2) The Orphan court records for Mary Weisel in 1838 list the surviving siblings and their residence. George - Bedford, Jacob - Bedford, Peter - Bedford, John - Bedford, Elizabeth - Philadelphia, and Josephs surviving children in Richland Twp. Bucks Co.

3) In 1837 Jacob Weisel's Declaration for Pension names his brother George Weisel who "can testify to his service and his character"

4) The bible records for John Weisel and Nancy Ober names his father as John George. "John WEISEL was born April 4 A. D. 1793 Bucks Co, PA, son of John George WEISEL and Sarah PHEIL"

Note on Child 3: Abraham WEISEL

Hon. Abraham Weisel was born on Dunning's creek, near Bedford, December 31, 1801. His father, John Weisel, came from Bucks county when a young man, and settled near Cessna postoffice. He was a carpenter, and worked at his trade. Of his twelve children, four are still living: Michael, Samuel, Abraham and Mary. Abraham was apprenticed to a miller, learned the trade and followed it a number of years. For fifteen years he was miller for Dr. Anderson, at the old mill situated near Bedford Springs. In 1841 Mr. Weisel was elected to the state legislature, and served during the regular and the extra session. The sessions were both very turbulent, and there was much excitement over the matter of reapportioning the congressional districts of the state. Mr. Weisel came to his present home in Friend's cove in 1860.

(Source: The History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania, Waterman, Watkins and Co., Chicago, 1884, p. 355.)

Note on Child 5: James WEISEL

James is not mentioned in his father's will as he died before his father's will was written. James, married in 1837, wrote a will in 1839 and only mentions his wife Mary. Very unlikely there were any children or heirs to receive a portion of the father's estate.

Note on Child 10: Henry WEISEL

No primary evidence exists Henry is a son of John and Sara Weisel. To date have no records of birth/baptisms for this family. Henry died before John Weisel wrote his will, and would not have been included.

Note on Child 12: Sarah WEISEL

In the will of her father written in 1844, Sarah Michtly was deceased and left 4 children.

(III) John J., son of John J. and Elizabeth (Gerry) Poorbaugh, was born in

Northampton township, Somerset county, Pennsylvania, 1830, died there May

15, 1912. He was a farmer all his life, first for his father, and later

purchasing the home farm, on which he resided until death. He was drafted

during the civil war, but for some unknown reason was never called into

active service. He was a lifelong Democrat and served in many township

offices. In religious faith he adhered to the German Reformed church. He

married (first) Mary Elizabeth Weisel, born in Somerset county,

Pennsylvania, February 20, 1835, died March 16, 1868, daughter of David and

Mary (Polly) (Sellers) Weisel. David Weisel was born in Bedford county,

Pennsylvania, his wife in Hagerstown, Maryland, but her parents died when

Mary was young and she was reared under the guidance of an older sister,

Mrs. Rock, of Bedford county, where she met and married David Weisel. He

was a millwright and miller, building and operating many of the early

mills of Somerset county. He also owned seventeen hundred acres of timber,

some of which he cleared and farmed. He was an ardent Whig, and with his

wife belonged to the German Reformed church. He was a natural mechanic, and

in addition to his milling and farming made coffins for his neighbors when

needed, and was a generally "handy man." He was born September 9, 1795,

married March 23, 1820, died August 13, 1853. His wife, Polly Sellers, was

born February 7, 1797, died May 18, 1879. Their children: 1. John, born

February 26, 1821, died unmarried, January 23, 1859. 2. George W., born

September 13, 1823, died April 17, 1857; married Susan, sister of Dennis

Comp, mentioned especially in this work. 3. Philip, born December 25, 1825,

died March or April, 1900; married Eliza Miller and lived on the home farm.

4. Sarah Anne, born December 30, 1827, died February 7, 1864; married

Hezekiah Fair, who survived her, and again married. 5. Henry, born May 30,

! 1830, died unmarried, September 9, 1861. 6. David, born January 12, 1833,

died December 30, 1838. 7. Mary Elizabeth, born February 20, 1835, died

March 16, 1868; married John J. Poorbaugh, of previous mention. 8. Emeline,

born August 20, 1837; now living in Scottdale, Pennsylvania: married

(first) Henry Suder, (second) Henry D. Bole, a soldier of the civil war,

serving in the Pennsylvania Regiment, Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery,

commanded by Colonel Gallup; they are now living in Scottdale,

Pennsylvania. 9. Samuel, born September 27, 1841, died September 24, 1882;

married Charlotte Dively. John J. Poorbaugh, married (second) Mrs. Mary

Sumpstine, widow of William Sumpstine. She bore him three children: Wilson,

of Meyersdale, Pennsylvania; Jacob Franklin, of Nebraska; Elam, of Mount

Pleasant, Pennsylvania. He married (third) at the age of sixty-seven years

a widow, Mrs. Martha Hamilton, aged forty years, who bore him Helen and

Marshall. Children of John J. Poorbaugh and his first wi! fe, Elizabeth

In 1841 Mr. Weisel was elected to the state legislature, and served during the regular and the extra session. The sessions were both very turbulent, and there was much excitement over the matter of reapportioning the congressional districts of the state. Mr. Weisel came to his present home in Friend's cove in 1860.

Biographical Review of Somerset and Bedford Counties, 1899 [Pennsylvania] Biographical Review Publishing Company.

Posted By: Carol Eddleman

Date: November 6 2002

Abraham Weisel, one of the foremost citizens of Colerain, Bedford County,

was born in this township, February 14, 1844, a son of Abraham, Sr. and

Elizabeth (Mann) Weisel. On the maternal side he comes of Revolutionary

stock, his great-grandfather Mann having fought during the struggle for

American independence under General Washington.

Abraham Weisel, Sr., was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He followed

the trade of a cooper when a young man, but afterward became widely known

as a miller, carrying on business for many years. He operated grist mills

in different sections of the county, having one at Bedford Springs for

fifteen years, one in Wolfsburg, one known as "the Patterson Mill", and for

a time also he had control of the plant known as "the old Poor House Mill".

In the early part of his life he enjoyed the distinction of being the first

superintendent of the celebrated Bedford Mineral Springs. During the latter

part of his life he devoted his energies to general farming in Colerain,

where he was for years one of the most influential citizens. He was a

self-made man. In 1842 he represented Bedford County in the state

legislature, having been elected on the Democratic ticket, which he always

supported. He served in various township offices with fidelity and ability,

and was also active! in religious work, being a member and an elder of the

Reformed Church. He died at his home in Colerain, August 26, 1890, full of

years and honors. The maiden name of his wife, who was born and bred in

Bedford County, was Elizabeth Mann.

Abraham Weisel, Jr. received his elementary education in the public schools

of the county, after which he attended the Allegheny Male and Female

Seminary at Rainsburg, Pennsylvania, under Professor J.W. Hughes, several

terms, and for a time was a student at a private normal training school in

Bedford, Pennsylvania, conducted by County Superintendent H.W. Fisher.

Subsequently for a period of about twenty-five years he was engaged as a

teacher in his own and adjoining townships, a position for which he was

well qualified. He taught a select school at Boydstown, then a suburb of

Bedford, but now included within the borough limits. During the term of

1874-75 he had charge of the intermediate department of the Everett Schools.

Mr. Weisel began his career as school teacher at Spruce Hill Schoolhouse,

in Snake Spring Township, on December 4, 1865. Commencing with a low-grade

"provisional certificate", by hard study and close attention to his duties

he worked his way up till he soon took rank with the leading teachers of

the county, having received in regular order from the proper school

authorities the different grades of teachers' certificates, namely,

provisional, professional, and permanent. Since retiring from the work of

school teaching, he has devoted himself, with well-directed energy and with

gratifying success, to agricultural pursuits. He has a farm of two hundred

and ten acres of land, on which he raises an abundance of the crops common

to this part of the county. He is also engaged to some extent in

stock-breeding. An active supporter of every good cause, Mr. Weisel

continues to take special interest in the education of the young, and as

school director of Colerain Township, ! an office in which he is now

serving his third term, he has rendered valuable service. He has also been

township clerk and township auditor a number of terms, positions which he

has filled most creditably. In politics he is identified with the

Democratic party. In the Reformed Church, of which he is a member, he is

now serving as elder, having virtually succeeded his father, who served in

that capacity many years.

Mr. Weisel and Malinda C. Hartman, a daughter of A.J. Hartman, of Loysburg,

Pennsylvania, were married on May 13, 1875. They have ten children, namely:

S. Estella, a teacher in the public schools of Bedford County; Elizabeth

A.; Henrietta C.; Theodore H.; Martha B.; Mary G.; William A.; Lloyd S.;

James H.; and Elsie M.C.
