(III) John J., son of John J. and Elizabeth (Gerry) Poorbaugh, was born in

Northampton township, Somerset county, Pennsylvania, 1830, died there May

15, 1912. He was a farmer all his life, first for his father, and later

purchasing the home farm, on which he resided until death. He was drafted

during the civil war, but for some unknown reason was never called into

active service. He was a lifelong Democrat and served in many township

offices. In religious faith he adhered to the German Reformed church. He

married (first) Mary Elizabeth Weisel, born in Somerset county,

Pennsylvania, February 20, 1835, died March 16, 1868, daughter of David and

Mary (Polly) (Sellers) Weisel. David Weisel was born in Bedford county,

Pennsylvania, his wife in Hagerstown, Maryland, but her parents died when

Mary was young and she was reared under the guidance of an older sister,

Mrs. Rock, of Bedford county, where she met and married David Weisel. He

was a millwright and miller, building and operating many of the early

mills of Somerset county. He also owned seventeen hundred acres of timber,

some of which he cleared and farmed. He was an ardent Whig, and with his

wife belonged to the German Reformed church. He was a natural mechanic, and

in addition to his milling and farming made coffins for his neighbors when

needed, and was a generally "handy man." He was born September 9, 1795,

married March 23, 1820, died August 13, 1853. His wife, Polly Sellers, was

born February 7, 1797, died May 18, 1879. Their children: 1. John, born

February 26, 1821, died unmarried, January 23, 1859. 2. George W., born

September 13, 1823, died April 17, 1857; married Susan, sister of Dennis

Comp, mentioned especially in this work. 3. Philip, born December 25, 1825,

died March or April, 1900; married Eliza Miller and lived on the home farm.

4. Sarah Anne, born December 30, 1827, died February 7, 1864; married

Hezekiah Fair, who survived her, and again married. 5. Henry, born May 30,

! 1830, died unmarried, September 9, 1861. 6. David, born January 12, 1833,

died December 30, 1838. 7. Mary Elizabeth, born February 20, 1835, died

March 16, 1868; married John J. Poorbaugh, of previous mention. 8. Emeline,

born August 20, 1837; now living in Scottdale, Pennsylvania: married

(first) Henry Suder, (second) Henry D. Bole, a soldier of the civil war,

serving in the Pennsylvania Regiment, Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery,

commanded by Colonel Gallup; they are now living in Scottdale,

Pennsylvania. 9. Samuel, born September 27, 1841, died September 24, 1882;

married Charlotte Dively. John J. Poorbaugh, married (second) Mrs. Mary

Sumpstine, widow of William Sumpstine. She bore him three children: Wilson,

of Meyersdale, Pennsylvania; Jacob Franklin, of Nebraska; Elam, of Mount

Pleasant, Pennsylvania. He married (third) at the age of sixty-seven years

a widow, Mrs. Martha Hamilton, aged forty years, who bore him Helen and

Marshall. Children of John J. Poorbaugh and his first wi! fe, Elizabeth

Weisel: 1. Henry A., of whom further. 2. Silas, died in infancy. 3. Herman,

an invalid, now residing in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. 4. Nelson, a

farmer and dairyman, near Mount Pleasant. 5. John, died aged ten years, his

mother giving up her life at his birth.

Will of Johannes Weisel of Bedford County, Pennsylvania (Bedford County Court House. Will Book No. 3?, page 299.).

In the name of God amen, I John Weisel of St. Clair Township, Bedford County

and State of Pennsylvania being advanced in years and infirm of body, but of

sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do make & publish this my

last will & testament in manner and form following, viz. First I order and

direct that all my just debts be fully paid by my executors as soon after my

decease as may be - and if after the payment of my debts there should be a

surplus of personal property, I order & direct the same to be divided as is

hereinafter mentioned.

 

Secondly It is my will and I hereby order & direct my executors hereinafter

named to sell and dispose of my real estate, consisting of two contiguous &

adjoining tracts of land, being the properties I now occupy, and I hereby

authorize & empower my executors to make a deed or deeds therefor, & convey

the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof in fee simple. Said sale to

be made by my executors as soon after my decease as they may in their

discretion, deem prudent & advisable and the sale to be made either privately

or by publicly xxxxx or outcry as will be to the best advantage of which my

executors are to be the judges and the proceeds of said sale I order & direct

to be divided as follows:

 

Viz. the whole to be divided into eleven equal parts, and one equal part

thereof to be paid by my executors to pay to my son John Weisel, one other

equal part to my son David Weisel, one other equal part to my son Abraham

Weisel, one other equal part to my son Philip Weisel, one other equal part to

my son Isaac, one other to my son Michael, two equal parts to my son Samuel,

one equal part to my daughter Mary, intermarried to Jacob Michtly?, one other

equal part to the children of my deceased daughter Elizabeth intermarried

with Adam Bowers in the following proportions viz. Sophia the sum of twenty

dollars, John the sum of twenty dollars, and the residue of said equal part

to Elizabeth Bowers. And the other equal part of my estate I give and

bequeath to the four children of my deceased daughter Sarah Michtly.

 

 

It is also my will that the two shares which I have directed to be paid to my

son Samuel by my executors, are to remain in the hands of my executors for

six years after the sale of my place, they paying to him the interest

thereof annually but none of the principal until after the said six years.

And I hereby appoint my executors trustees to hold the same for my said son.

 

It is also my will that the residue of my personal estate should there be any

after the payment of my debts shall be divided and paid over in the same way

as I have directed my real estate to be divided & paid only that Samuel shall

have his portion at once.

 

And I also order & it is my will that my wife Barbara shall have her third

according to the intestate laws of Pennsylvania, and when my executors sell

my place, I hereby direct that they shall sell the same so as to secure her

third in as according to law.

 

Lastly, I hereby constitute & appoint my two sons John Weisel & Philip Weisel

the executors of this my last will and testament, hereby declaring this & no

other to be my last will & testament and revoking all wills & testaments by

me heretofore made.

 

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 30th day of April

AD 1844.

Hezekiah Fair, who survived her, and again married. 5. Henry, born May 30,

died December 30, 1838. 7. Mary Elizabeth, born February 20, 1835, died

March 16, 1868; married John J. Poorbaugh, of previous mention. 8. Emeline,

born August 20, 1837; now living in Scottdale, Pennsylvania: married

(first) Henry Suder, (second) Henry D. Bole, a soldier of the civil war,

serving in the Pennsylvania Regiment, Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery,

commanded by Colonel Gallup; they are now living in Scottdale,

Pennsylvania. 9. Samuel, born September 27, 1841, died September 24, 1882;

married Charlotte Dively. John J. Poorbaugh, married (second) Mrs. Mary

Sumpstine, widow of William Sumpstine. She bore him three children: Wilson,

of Meyersdale, Pennsylvania; Jacob Franklin, of Nebraska; Elam, of Mount

Pleasant, Pennsylvania. He married (third) at the age of sixty-seven years

a widow, Mrs. Martha Hamilton, aged forty years, who bore him Helen and

Marshall. Children of John J. Poorbaugh and his first wi! fe, Elizabeth

Weisel: 1. Henry A., of whom further. 2. Silas, died in infancy. 3. Herman,

an invalid, now residing in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. 4. Nelson, a

farmer and dairyman, near Mount Pleasant. 5. John, died aged ten years, his

mother giving up her life at his birth.
