The published biography of Alexander Wiysel says Joseph and Susanna Wissinger had 6 children. 4 were still living in 1889. (Refer to sources for son Alexander) Six children agrees with the 1850 census as there are 4 children at home, Esther has married and left home, and Alexander is adjacent in the census.
This does not agree with the 1860 census which includes 6 additional children. At least 4 of the children (Jacob, Daniel, Henry, and Rachel) should have been included on the 1850 census. Did Joseph marry a second time to a different Susanna about the same age as his first wife? There is evidence this is the case, that the mother of the younger children is Susanna/Susan Horner.
In the 1880 census for Alexander Wisel, Daniel and Mattie (Martha) are included in the household and the relationship given is brother and sister [of Alexander]. The evidence supports Joseph Wisel as the father of all 12 children.
The writings of Ethyl Adams Baker, a descendant of Rachel Wisel, state the parents of Rachel are Joseph Wisel and Susanna Horner. As of this time, no documentation has been uncovered to verify the parents of Rachel. The death record of Jacob Wisel lists his father as Joseph Wisel and mother as Susan Horner.
The first 6 children are assigned to Joseph Wisel and Susanna Wissinger per Alexander's biography and the 1850 census. The second 6 children are assigned to Joseph Wisel and Susanna Horner per Jacob Wisel's Wabash Co, IN death record and the writings of Etheyl Adams Baker.
Notes:
1) From the Will of John Horner, Ebensburg Court House, Will Book 1, p. 15, March 29, 1814, resident of Conemaugh Twp, John Horner names his wife as Susanna and has minor
children but they are not named. This woman is not a good candiate as she would be about 15 years older than the census data which has Susanna born about 1804.
2) July 2002, Comments by Sara Deffenbaugh, a descendant of Joseph Wisel and is researching this line - "We don't have any source for Susanna Horner d/o John Horner and as of this date I haven't been able to find any firm proof. We also know about the entry in Ludwig's will concerning Joseph Wisel but so far have not been able to verify that the Susanna mentioned is indeed Susanna Wissinger d/o Ludwig. I have spent many hours at the historical society looking through family files and anything I can find with Wissinger & Wisel but so far, nothing. I also contacted Bob Wissinger who is a direct decendant of
Ludwig and he has never found any concrete proof."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Misc notes for Susannah Wissinger
Susannah Wissinger, as wife of Joseph Wisel, is mentioned in the will of Ludwig
Wissinger. She was to be paid $30 one year after the death of Ludwig. This Susanna is not included in the list of his children. The codicil includes the name of a his daughter Susanna Morgan, whose name was not included in the list of children. (See source for marriage.) Two marriages are attributed to Susanna Morgan and it is very unlikely Susanna Morgan could have been the wife of Joseph Wisel in 1835. From the will of Ludwig, it is assumed Susanna was a Wissinger but her parentage can't be determined.

Danville, Virginia May 16, 1864
Dear Wife- Will write a few lines to inform you that I am in
good Health, and hope these few lines may find you all in good health too.

I will be back in 1 year's time to you.

Iva Wysel (She always used this spelling), daughter of William Wysel, and granddaughter of Moses Wisel writes further:
The above is written exactly as the letter (original) which is encased in a
picture frame of Grandfather who is in uniform. He appears to be a small
man, with full grown whiskers-his hair appeared to be dark. I also hunted
up the History of Cambria County, PA. I could only find the second volume
and the third. The 2nd volume deals with the Civil War. It gives the
following:

WILLIAM WYSEL, South Fork, was born October 20, 1856, son of Moses Wysel, and grandson of Joseph Wysel. The father of Joseph Wysel was George Wysel, who came from Maryland to Cambria County where he took up a tract of land in Mineral Point. Wysel Hill, which was then included within the limits of Bedford County, was named in his honor. He was a farmer and hunter. His brother John was a soldier in the revolutionary army. George Wysel lived to an advanced age.
Joseph Wysel, son of George Wysel, was born in Maryland, and was a child when the family moved to Pennsylvania. He owned a large tract of land in Mineral Point, and moved to Wabash, Indiana County [this is a mistake printed in book] where he ended his days. He was a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church.
Moses Wysel, son of Joseph Wysel, was bon December 19, 1831 and was reared on a farm, being at one time employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as a track foreman. During the Civil War he enlisted in the Eighteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry, and in May 1864, was captured at Mine Run, whence he was taken to Andersonville prison where he died. He was interred at National Park July 28, 1865. [as printed in book]. He married December 19, 1855, Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Funk and they were the parents of three children: 1. William, of whom later. 2. Henrietta, born in 1858, wife of Ezra Oaks, had eight children. 3. Jennie, born in 1860, wife of Joseph Wicks, Junior, had ten children.
William Wysel, son of Moses and Elizabeth [Funk] Wysel was educated at the Soldiers' Orphans schools at Cassville and Jacksonville, Pennsylvania. He also pursued a course in mining from the Scranton school of correspondence. He was employed as a clerk until 1896 and in 1901 engaged in mercantile business, intrusting the management of the store to his son, while he himself worked at the trade of carpenter. For sixteen years he served as clerk of the borough council, and for the same length of time was school director. Fore three years he held the office of treasure of the borough school fund, and at present is assessor of first ward. He is a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Mr. Wysel married, in 1876, Anna, daughter of Aaron Berkebile and they are the parents of the following children: Ella, born 1876; Alva B., 1878; Joseph, 1880; Henry, 1881; John W., 1884; Edith, 1886; Charles H., 1888; Laura, 1891; and Iva, 1896.

The Drafted Militia
The much talked of, reasonably dreaded, Draft of Militia was made throughout the State on Thursday, some two hundred being drawn in this county alone. No undue excitement was manifested, but on the contrary, everything was conducted with dignity and decorum. Commissioner Harr was present and superintended the delicate operation. Constable O’Neill acted as assistant and blindfolded, drew the required number of names from the wheel. They are as follows:
Croyle Twp.:
Moses Weisel
Of the above number a due proportion, of course, will be represented in the army by “substitutes.” The prices paid for such ranged from $200 to $300. They leave for Harrisburg today.
