Some War Relics
W.H.Whisel received last week, for Grand Army Post of Everett, from D.M.Cooper, Georgia, a couple of interesting relics of the war of the rebellion. One a rifle shell with the lead still in it and the other, a minule rifle ball. They were from the rebel guns, and are of English make. They were picked up on the battle field of Chicamauga, near the Snodgrass House, the headquarters of General Thomas. They take the memory back to those fearful days and that desperate and bloody battle and the brave soldiers and that grand old hero, Gen. Thomas, who, by his brave and courageous stand against the determined effort of the enemy, saved the army and earned the title of the "Rock of Chicamauga."

There is circumstantial evidence that Susan Weisel, daughter of John Weisel and
Margaret Schneider, is the mother of Rebecca --?-- (1835) and William H. Whisel (1840)
and married Watson Prosser about 1845. Watson Prosser and Susan had the following children: David W. and Morgan Prosser.
1) Susan Prosser is buried in the same cemetery as John and Margaret Weisel and
her date of death is June 13, 1858.
2) In the will (1855) of John Weisel, John adds a codicil on June 22, 1858 that his daughter
Susan has died and her share is to be divided between the remaining children with
the exception of Josiah.
3) The Obituary for William H. Whisel states he is survived by a sister Rebecca Whitaker
and a half brother Morgan Prosser.

William Whisel was the first person to use the spelling "Whisel". The family story goes, when he enlisted in the Civil War, the person who enrolled him spelled his name that way. He lost his left arm below the elbow at the battle of Fredricksburgh, Va. on DEC 13, 1862. Because of this injury he would be entitled to a pension. He did not want to have a problem when he applied for his pension, therefore he continued to use the Whisel spelling.
The father of William Whisel is unknown. William's mother is assumed to be Susan, who married a Prosser. William's obit names Rebecca as a sister and Morgan Prosser as a half-brother.
A story passed down in the family is "I remember hearing the story that my ggrandfather was taken by wagon at a very young age and supposedly raised by a Mr. Shaffer. The story goes that he remembered being driven away in a wagon. I think that the Mr. Shaffer was a miller. Perhaps William learned that trade from Mr Shaffer. - Donna"

Obituary for William H Whisel, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, 1923.
William H. Whisel passed away at his home on last Friday evening, he was a brave
soldier. He served with the Union forces during the Civil War and lost an arm in the
Battle of Fredricksburgh and was confined to Libby Prison.
William H. Whisel, one of Everett's oldest, best known and most highly regarded
citizens passed away at his home, on Water Street, on last Friday afternoon from
infirmities incident to advanced age.
William Henry Whisel was born near Pleasantville, this county on July 4, 1840,
being 84 years, 1 month and 27 days old. For several years, he was engaged in
school teaching in various sections of this county. He was a resident of this county.
He was a resident of Everett at the outbreak of the Civil War and was one of the first
to answer the call to service and was a member of Company F, Eighth Pennsylvania
Reserves. On the 27th day of June 1862, Mr. Whisel was captured by the Confederate
forces at Gaines Mill, Virginia and sent to Richmond, where he spent forty-two days in
Libby Prison and in Castle Thunder on Belle Island. During the Battle of Fredricksburgh,
after his release from prison, he wounded in the left arm so badly that that member had
to be amputated at the shoulder.--(I have read that it had been amputated below the elbow).
Mr. Whisel was a courageous and gritty soldier and would not take an anesthetic when his
arm was taken off, but said to the surgeon "I can stand it if you can," and sat up and watched
the operation. After his injury he was honorably discharged from the service and returned
to Everett. For twenty years, Mr. Whisel was Postmaster at Everett, being a capable and
efficient official. After his tenure of office he purchased the Everett Foundry and Machine
shop from the late Frederick Felton, conducting the business under the firm name of
Robb and Whisel. He filled various borough offices, was a stalwart Republican,
Past Commander of Lieutenant Josiah Baughman Post No. 131 G. A. R., and member of
Zion Lutheran Church.
On February 5, 1965, Mr. Whisel was united in marriage with Rebecca King, who preceded
him in death some years ago. Left to survive the parents are the following children:
Mrs. Samuel (Carrie) Robb and Edgar Whisel of Monessen, Pa.; Marshall Whisel of Hopewell
and Mrs. James Laughlin of Everett. A SISTER, Mrs. Rebecca Whitaker of Philadelphia and
a HALF-brother, Morgan Prosser of Alum Bank, also survives.
Funeral services for the departed comrade were held at his late home, on Water Street,
Monday afternoon, the Reverend George H. Ketterer, of the Methodist Episcopal Church
officiating, followed by internment in Everett Cemetery.
