Note on Husband: George Michael WEISEL

Notes from H. Alan Weisel, State College, PA, May 2002

1) Michael Weisel [Jr.] (1750-April 29, 1818) is buried in the Lower Tinicum

Union Cemetery - Fox Graveyard with a Revolutionary War marker on his grave.

This information was obtained from the Lower Tinicum church history volume in

the Spruance Library, Doylestown, PA

2) Early Bedminster and Tinicum Township Tax Rolls

Michael Weisel, Jr. is the eldest son of Michael Weisel, Sr. and Magdalena

Drach. He is listed, along with his father, Michael Sr., on the tax rolls

for Bedminster Township in 1783. Their names appear again on the 1793 rolls,

and the 1796 rolls. Michael Weisel Sr. died in June, 1796. The 1798 tax

rolls show only George Weisel and Michael Weisel, Jr. in one entry followed

by Henry Weisel, the second son. This George Weisel is almost certainly

George L. born in 1773. The 1800 Bedminster tax rolls show only George Wisel

and Henry Wisel.

3) Michael Weisel [Jr.] appears on the 1800 Tinicum Township [Bucks] tax rolls

and is immediately followed by a George Wisel. The occupation of both men is

listed as tavern keeper and George is also listed as having a sawmill. It is

believed that George Weisel of Tinicum is the son of Jacob Weisel. These

records seem to indicate that he was in business with his cousin, Michael

Weisel. George apparently was more successful than Michael as he

progressively pays more land tax than does Michael. This success may have

been a factor in his migration in 1805 to Lycoming County where he set up a

mill and went into business for himself. It is believed that John, the

middle son of Jacob Weisel, also migrated from Bucks County to Bedford County

a few years after the death of his father.

Note on Wife: Catherine GERES

Surname for Catherine is based on birth and baptismal records. See marriage facts.

Note on Child 6: Michael G. WEISELL

Genealogy of the Weisell Family

by William Beil Weisell, 1986

4. Michael Gearis Weisell, born 1787, either Bedminster or Tinicum and died in Trumbell County, Ohio, near Lordstown, 1870. He married Catherine Mcintyre, who may have grown up across the Delaware River in New Jersey. Her brother, Will McIntyre, had a prominent record in Mount Pleasant, NJ.

Michael G is the history of migration West. As a young man he owned a mill on the Delaware River at Point Pleasant. At the time there was developing there a commercial area of factories and mills utilizing the Delaware’s water power. This continued into modern times and was largely razed when a nuclear power site was assigned there. (In construction the site was opposed and then revoked.) In those days before the prevalence of banks in all commercial enterprises it was the practice for individuals, often relatives, to go on the bond of others. Reportedly, through this, he lost his mill when the debtor defaulted. Soon after, approximately 1824 he left Bucks County to go west. The first children were born before this, including Robert in 1820. He stopped at Tompkins County, NY near (supposedly north) of Ithaca and stayed until 1830. There in 1828 William Wilson Weisell was born. The NY census record of 1830 does not contain Michael but William’s birth is recorded. Then begins the Ohio period. A brother Dan had moved to northeastern Ohio in the vicinity of Warren, Trumbull County. Michael joined him in 1830 and built and farmed at what is still called Weisel Corner, a crossroads, southwest 2 ½ miles from Lordstown. He had a blacksmith’s shop at the N.E. corner. A second Weisell home still stands (and remodeled) a short distance south of the corner within sight of both the modern GM plant and the Ohio Turnpike.

Michael Gearis and Catherine had additional family in Lordstown. He then died in 1860 and is buried along with his wife and some children in a cemetery west of Lordstown.

Note on Child 7: David WEISEL

David is not mentioned in his father's 1818 will. It is therefore possible

David predeceased his father.

Bucks and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania being in a very weak state of body,

but of sound mind, memory and understanding, for which I thank God, and

considering that all flesh must die, have thought fit to establish this my

last will and testament in manner following, that is, I commend my soul to

God who gave it, and I desire my body to be buried in a Christian like manner

at the discretion of my executors herein named -- and as touching my worldly

estate wherewith this pleased God to bless me, my will is, that after payment

of my funeral charges and just debts, my dear and loving wife Mary Weissel

shall take the case of drawers that stand in the room where I now lay, one

bed, four chairs which she shall chose, and such other of my household goods

as she shall choose, to the amount of twenty dollars; likewise she shall take

any cow she please out of my flock and two sheep, and after she has taken

these things out, she shall have one third part of my movable estate and the

yearly income or interest of five hundred pounds during her natural life,

and at her decease it shall be divided as the other part of my estate,

Catherine's bed and such other articles about the house as have been

generally called hers, she is to keep and after the above mentioned articles

are taken, my will is that as soon as my executors shall think it suitable

and convenient, after my decease, that they shall sell all my estate both

personal and real, and make a fair and equal division of the amount or

proceeds thereof among all my children namely Elizabeth Smith, Magdalena

Busy, Eve Shwartz, Michael Weissel, Daniel Weissel, Susanna Shwartz,

Catherine Weissel, Tobias Weissel, and Samuel Weissel, each and every one of

them to have share and share alike -- and lastly I do make and ordain my

sons-in-law Jacob Busy of Tenicum and Nicholas Shwartz of Plumstead executors

of this my last will and testament, revoking , disannulling and disallowing

and making void all other or former will and testament constituting ordaining

and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In

witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty second day of

April in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and eighteen.

The original church stood on the hill near the abandoned cemetery. It was built of logs, probably in 1747, the "Brick" church, the third structure at that place erected by the Lutheran and Reformed congregations, was destroyed by fire. The denominations then separated, the Lutherans building a new church and the Reformed congregation rebuilding and occupying the Brick Church. The present (1923) date stone as "Lower Tinicum Reformed Church-rebuilt A. D. 1908."

History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania Edited by J. H. Battle Philadelphia PA., Chicago Ill.: A. Warner & Co., Publisher 1887. p. 1130.

"Isaiah Bissey, farmer, P.O. Point Pleasant, was born in the place where he has always lived. His father, Jacob Bissey, also lived here. He was born July 28, 1768, and died in April, 1833. He was a weaver as well as a farmer, and was an industrious man, highly spoken of by those who remember him. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. His wife was Mary Weisel, who was born August 19, 1780, and died October 15, 1872. Their children were Susanna, Catherine, Isaiah, Amos, Julian,Jonas, Elias,Mahlon, Charlotte and Silas. Those living are Charlotte, wife of Bauer Nonamaker, of Plumstead township; and Isaiah, who was born March 1, 1812. The others are deceased. Isaiah married Lidy, daughter of Michael Walter, who was born in Bedminster township. She died leaving three children: Hannah, widow of Jacob Long, in Doylsestown; Rachel, wife of Josiah Worman, living with her father; and Catherine,

also at home. Mr. Bissey married for his second wife the widow of Moses Fox, who had been a Miss Mills. To this union two children were born: Isabella, who died in infancy; and Emma, wife of Isaac R. Lear, of Plumstead. Mr. Bissey, by industry and careful habits, has acquired a well-earned competence and the esteem of his fellow-men."
