Marvin Leroy Evenson, the youngest son of Ole and Petra (Erlandson) Evenson, was born December 14, 1921, on the family farmstead which Ole and Petra homesteaded in Lien Township, Roberts County, SD, in 1893. Marvin along with his twin sister Mildred, grew up in the rural setting of northeastern South Dakota. Marvin was united in marriage to Veronica Illies in 1944. Marvin and Veronica had three children from this union. Marvin attended New Effington school and later ran the family farm for Ole and Petra until 1946. He then owned and operated a Farmer's Union Co-op service station in New Effington from 1946 until 1948. Marvin and his family then moved to Longview, WA, and he worked with his brother Arnie for The Oregonian newspaper.
Marvin returned to the local tri-state area in 1950 and purchased a farm in Wilkin County, Minnesota. He operated that farm until 1963. Marvin then traveled to California and eventually worked for the Long Beach Naval Shipyard as an electrician from 1967 until 1986. Upon retirement from the shipyard, he had a small painting business for a few years in Southern California. Marvin then decided to retire again and returned to New Effington, SD, in 1989 where he lived until his death. His loving children cared for him and were at his side when he passed at 2:00 p.m., on October 29, 2006. Marvin was a long standing member of the Masons, Shriners, and Eastern Star Organizations. He was a past Master and a 32nd Degree Mason. He maintained his membership in the Fairmount Tri-State Lodge 37, Fairmount, ND, EL Bekal Shriners of Anaheim, CA, and Order of the Eastern Star, Meridian Chapter No. 310, Long Beach, CA.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Ole and Petra Evenson and 15 brothers and sisters. Preceding him in death were eight brothers including Lyle, Willie, "Baby" Emil, Louie, Edward, Clifford, Emil, and Arnold. Also preceding him in death were his seven sisters including Othella, Edna, Selma, Ruth, Avenal, Ellen and his beloved twin sister, Mildred.
Survivors include his three children Larry (Mary) Evenson, Sartell, MN, Marilyn Evenson, Fargo, ND, and Michael (Deborah) Evenson, Fargo, ND. Grandchildren include Marie Evenson, Philadelphia, PA, Gregory Evenson, Sartell, MN, Daniel Evenson, Fargo, ND, and James Evenson, Fargo, ND. Marvin is also survived by several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and an exceptional friend, Alfred Braun.
Marvin thoroughly enjoyed life and visiting with his many relatives, neighbors and friends throughout the United States and Canada. Marvin will be missed by all who knew his skillful mechanical abilities, warmth, and generosity.
The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
