Abraham Weisel, one of the foremost citizens of Colerain, Bedford County,
was born in this township, February 14, 1844, a son of Abraham, Sr. and
Elizabeth (Mann) Weisel. On the maternal side he comes of Revolutionary
stock, his great-grandfather Mann having fought during the struggle for
American independence under General Washington.
Abraham Weisel, Sr., was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He followed
the trade of a cooper when a young man, but afterward became widely known
as a miller, carrying on business for many years. He operated grist mills
in different sections of the county, having one at Bedford Springs for
fifteen years, one in Wolfsburg, one known as "the Patterson Mill", and for
a time also he had control of the plant known as "the old Poor House Mill".
In the early part of his life he enjoyed the distinction of being the first
superintendent of the celebrated Bedford Mineral Springs. During the latter
part of his life he devoted his energies to general farming in Colerain,
where he was for years one of the most influential citizens. He was a
self-made man. In 1842 he represented Bedford County in the state
legislature, having been elected on the Democratic ticket, which he always
supported. He served in various township offices with fidelity and ability,
and was also active! in religious work, being a member and an elder of the
Reformed Church. He died at his home in Colerain, August 26, 1890, full of
years and honors. The maiden name of his wife, who was born and bred in
Bedford County, was Elizabeth Mann.
Abraham Weisel, Jr. received his elementary education in the public schools
of the county, after which he attended the Allegheny Male and Female
Seminary at Rainsburg, Pennsylvania, under Professor J.W. Hughes, several
terms, and for a time was a student at a private normal training school in
Bedford, Pennsylvania, conducted by County Superintendent H.W. Fisher.
Subsequently for a period of about twenty-five years he was engaged as a
teacher in his own and adjoining townships, a position for which he was
well qualified. He taught a select school at Boydstown, then a suburb of
Bedford, but now included within the borough limits. During the term of
1874-75 he had charge of the intermediate department of the Everett Schools.
Mr. Weisel began his career as school teacher at Spruce Hill Schoolhouse,
in Snake Spring Township, on December 4, 1865. Commencing with a low-grade
"provisional certificate", by hard study and close attention to his duties
he worked his way up till he soon took rank with the leading teachers of
the county, having received in regular order from the proper school
authorities the different grades of teachers' certificates, namely,
provisional, professional, and permanent. Since retiring from the work of
school teaching, he has devoted himself, with well-directed energy and with
gratifying success, to agricultural pursuits. He has a farm of two hundred
and ten acres of land, on which he raises an abundance of the crops common
to this part of the county. He is also engaged to some extent in
stock-breeding. An active supporter of every good cause, Mr. Weisel
continues to take special interest in the education of the young, and as
school director of Colerain Township, ! an office in which he is now
serving his third term, he has rendered valuable service. He has also been
township clerk and township auditor a number of terms, positions which he
has filled most creditably. In politics he is identified with the
Democratic party. In the Reformed Church, of which he is a member, he is
now serving as elder, having virtually succeeded his father, who served in
that capacity many years.
Mr. Weisel and Malinda C. Hartman, a daughter of A.J. Hartman, of Loysburg,
Pennsylvania, were married on May 13, 1875. They have ten children, namely:
S. Estella, a teacher in the public schools of Bedford County; Elizabeth
A.; Henrietta C.; Theodore H.; Martha B.; Mary G.; William A.; Lloyd S.;
James H.; and Elsie M.C.

7 May 1926
Bedford, May 7 - Mrs. Abram Weisel, widow of the late Abram Weisel, a
former Justice of the Peace of Bedford, died at her late residence on East
Penn Street early Monday morning. While her health has been frail for
several months, her condition became critical following the death and
burial of her youngest son, J. Harold Weisel, of Pittsburg, two weeks ago.
Mrs. Weisel was a native of Friends Cove and a member of one of the oldest
Bedford County families. She lived an (unreadable) and useful life in the
home, the church and the community and was held in highesteem by all who
knew her. She is survived by the following children: Theodore, of Summitt;
Lloyd, of Everett; Mrs. Guy Blymer of Pittsburg; Miss Estella, of
Washington, D. C., and Misses Henrietta, Martha, Elizabeth and Elsie, of
Bedford. Funeral services were in charge of her pastor, the Rev. J. Albert
Eyler, of the Reformed Church of which she had been a life-long and
faithful member.

Mellon, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Mellon, known to practically everybody in Bedford as "Miss Lizzie", died at her apartments in the Ridenour Block on Sunday morning.
She was born October 19th, 1850 and was aged therefore 70 years, 4 months, and 24 days. She was a daughter of Andrew Mellon and his wife, Rebecca Snyder Mellon. She was born and reared at Belden, Bedford Co. In 1887 she came to Bedford to work in the home of J. Scott Corle. Later she became a clerk in Mr. Corle's Variety store. When Mr. Corle preceded her in death and the store came into the possession of his daughter and son-in-law, William A. Weisel, she continued as a faithful employee in the same store. Thus for 34 years she served the same family establishing a record not only for length of service but for fidelity in that service. Always kind and accommodating, she made for herself a host of friends who will regret her sudden death. Three brothers proceeded her to the spirit world and she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Drollinger of Kansas City, Kansas. Her funeral was held from the home of William A. Weisel on Tuesday afternoon, March 15th. She was a faithful member of St. John's Church and her pastor, Rev. J. Albert Eyler had charge of the services. Her body was laid to rest beside her brothers in St. Paul's Reformed cemetery, near Cessna, Pa.

Necrology
James Harold Weisel, aged 31 years, 2 months and 16 days, was born near
Rainsburg, Bedford County, Pa., February 1, 1895, a son of Abraham and
Minnie K. Weisel, the former of who died five or six years ago. His boyhood
was spent in this county. He attended the Bedford public schools and was a
graduate of the Bedford high school, class of 1911. He was a talented
musician and Bedford was proud to have him as one of its most accomplished
young men. In early manhood he was organist in the St. John's Reformed
church, of which he was a member. He had pursued musical courses in various
schools and his talent in this line was extraordinary. From his native town
he went to Johnstown, Pa., where he was organist in a theatre a few years,
going from that place to Detroit, Mich., in which city he was united in
marriage with Mrs. Lillian Quinn, nee Liebtag, March 28, 1917, and where he
resided until seven or eight years ago, since which time he had been a
resident of Pittsburgh, Pa., and at which place he had been, until the time
of his death, organist and director of the choir in the Second Presbyterian
church. As well as being a music director he was a noted composer of music,
mostly for instrumental and cantata renditions. He completed on
composition, while a patient in the Hospital. His untiring and never
ceasing efforts to progress still further in his musical career overtaxed
his physical condition and superinduced nephritis, from which death
resulted. He had been in ill health for several months and had received
medical treatment from the Central Clinic hospital at Salem, O., and to
which institution he was admitted on Monday, April 12, where he underwent a
surgical operation a few days prior to his death. In the passing of Mr.
Weisel from this world to the Great Beyond, Bedford has lost a talented and
high respected native and former resident. His untimely death has filled
the hearts of his many friends with deep sorrow. The surviving relatives
are his mother, his widow, who with two sons, James Harold, Jr., and Philip
Stover and one daughter, Elizabeth Louise, resides at Pittsburgh, Pa.;
three brothers, William A. of Bedford, Pa.; Lloyd of Everett, Pa., and
Theodore of Summit Hill, Pa.; and six sisters, Miss Estelle Weisel of
Washington D. C., Mary, wife of C. G. Blymer of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Misses
Elizabeth, Henrietta, Martha and Elsie, residing with their mother in Bedford.
