Diehl, Joseph S.
The subject of this sketch was born, August
15, 1817, on the farm where he died, November 21,
1900, aged eighty-three years, three months and
six days. He connected himself with the Reformed
church in early life and always lived a true and faithful life.
On October 21, 1847, he was married to Miss
Mary Ann Shoemaker by the Rev. Matthew Irvine. To
this union were born two children — Rebecca, who
is dead, and George W. Diehl, of Pleasant Valley.
On February 22, 1856, his first wife died, and on
November 20, 1856, he was married to Mrs. Rebecca
Weisel by the Rev. C. F. Hoffmeier. This union
was blessed with four children, who still survive
— Mrs. H. C. Hunt, Mrs. Calvin Zimmers, Adam F.
and Mrs. George Koontz. His second wife departed
this life July 19, 1897. Since that time he had
been making his home with his son-in-law, Harry
C. Hunt, who lived in part of the house.
Those who had received a father's care,
aside from his own children, were Mrs. Louisa
Dibert, daughter of his second wife, A. J.
Pennell, Susanna Kegg, Asa Nycum and Mrs. Agnes Smith.
Mr. Diehl was a true and faithful member of
the Trinity Reformed church and was elder of this
church for many years, He was always found in his
pew at service time when his health would permit.
He was a kind and loving father. As a neighbor he
could not be excelled. He was always willing to
lend a helping hand in time of need. Many were
the kind and loving words we have received from
him, which came from his heart, for he was always
kind-hearted and in adverse circumstances, when
the whole world seemed to go wrong, he looked
forward to the bright side, expecting every thing would come right.
His remains were laid in their last resting
place on Saturday forenoon amid a large crowd of
sorrowing friends, in the Trinity graveyard. His
pastor, Rev. Calvin P. Wehr, officiating. Thus we
have laid another who has been near and dear to
us to rest, and we feel assured that when the
final summons came he was called up higher, where
everything will be bright, and love and happiness reign supreme.
Samuel Weisel and Rebecca Koontz had a daughter Louisa who married David Dibert.
The evidence linking the widow Rebecca Weisel marrying Jospeh Diehl is the sentance in the obit of Joseph Diehl which states "Those who had received a father's care, aside from his own children, were Mrs. Louisa Dibert, daughter of his second wife".
