Passing of a Pioneer.
Another pioneer, Nels Kofstad, well and favorable known thruout this part of Steele county, whose death occurred at his home southwest of Ellendale, on Friday, January 7th, was laid to rest in the LeSueur River cemetery on Tuesday, January 11th. ... The New Richland Star pays the following tribute to this sturdy upright Christian: "Interesting as it may be to read the making of this northwest as recorded in history, it remains only cold type on the printed page when compared with the events of history as related by those who had to blaze their way in the wilderness--a wilderness such as this once was. Mr. Kofstad was among the very first settlers of this township. The village of New Richoand was at that time not even a dream, and the place where Owatonna now stands was at that time decorated with one lone log but nestled in the thick of the woods. ...
Mr. Kofstad was one of the founders of the LeSueur River church and a strong and substantial pillar in the congreation.
